Germany says it no longer depends on Russian energy

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has said that Germany no longer depends on Russian imports for energy supplies.

Linder has said that Germany has fully diversified its energy infrastructure since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine last year.

Since the start of the war, Russia has cut off gas supplies to Europe, raising concerns among Europeans about power outages this winter.

But Germany has found new sources of energy, said Lindner.

"Yes, of course, Germany is still dependent on energy imports, but today, not on Russian imports, but on global markets," he said.

In the past, Germany imported half of the gas it needed from Russia, as well as more than a third of its oil.

Russia halted gas supplies in August last year, while Germany gave up imports of Russian oil earlier this year.

In the race to find energy sources, Germany has reopened coal-fired power plants, has not shut down nuclear plants and pushed forward with ideas for storing natural gas imported from Norway and the United States./REL
