Germany/ Chancellor and ministers spend thousands of euros on hair, makeup and

Thousands of euros have been spent on the external appearance of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to the official response his office gave to a question from the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

As reported by Der Spiegel and Stern magazines, the chancellor has spent 12,501 euros on beauticians, make-up artists and hairdressers since taking office last May until August.

But the Federal Minister of Economics, Katherina Reiche, spends more than Merz. From May 6 to August 4, Reiche spent 19,264 euros on her personal care. Of this, 8,324 euros are related to travel expenses for her make-up artist, who accompanied Reiche on her trips.

In total, all ministries spent 58,738 euros on makeup artists and hairdressers during the first four months of the new government's mandate.

The highest expenses for a photographer are recorded at the Ministry of Finance, with more than 33,700 euros. The Foreign Minister spends 19,000 on a photographer, while all ministries together reached 172,608 euros.

In the past, the "champion" in personal care spending was former Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock, who, in 2022, charged the public treasury 136,500 euros to have her personal makeup artist with her on her travels. /CNA
