Finland promises millions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine, but no tanks

Finland has announced a new package of more than 400 million euros ($434 million) in military aid to Ukraine.

The pledge triples the total value of Finnish defense aid to Ukraine to 590 million euros, the defense ministry said in a statement on January 20. A ministry spokesman said the package does not include Leopard 2 tanks.

Germany faces increasing pressure to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks, or at least give permission to other allies such as Poland to deliver the German-made tanks from their stockpile.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has openly called on Berlin to send tanks to Ukraine.

"If you have Leopard tanks, give them to us," Zelensky told German public television.

German Chancellor Olaf Schoz has told US congressmen in Davos that Germany will supply Ukraine with battle tanks if the US does so, according to a statement by Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. .

The re-export of Leopards requires the approval of the German Government, so even other countries that have these tanks cannot send them to Ukraine without this approval./REL
