20 members of one of the most dangerous gangs escape from prison/

The escape of 20 members of a notoriously dangerous gang held in a Guatemalan prison has sparked a political crisis in the Central American country, leading to the dismissal of the interior minister on Wednesday.

“I have decided to make changes to the team that had been in charge of security and I have accepted the resignation of Francisco Jimenez from the position of interior minister, as well as those of the two deputy ministers ,” Guatemala’s social democratic president, Bernardo Arevalo, said in a televised address.

The escape of the imprisoned members of Barrio 18 was discovered on Sunday while the head of state was abroad, visiting Europe. There have been protests in the country over the government’s inaction on crime.

Authorities have increased security measures in prisons and on the borders with El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico, and the government is offering rewards for information leading to the arrest of the fugitives. So far, only one has been recaptured.

The rival gangs Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha, designated "terrorist" organizations by Washington, claim control of parts of Guatemala, where they engage in extortion to extract money from merchants, transporters and other citizens; if their targets refuse to pay, they are often killed.
