Climate activists in Germany under the handcuffs of the police, 7 young people

Thanks to an investigation into climate activists, the German police have carried out a series of checks in 7 states of the country. This group called "The Last Generation" is suspected to have formed a criminal group with their activities.

Activists of the "Last Generation" group have blocked traffic in German cities and thrown potatoes at works of art for a long time.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been harsh towards this group, calling their activity "completely crazy".

For several weeks in a row, a strong debate has been held in Germany whether the "Last Generation" group should be considered by law as a criminal organization.

Conservative lawmakers have called for harsher punishments for activists, saying prison sentences are appropriate, while those on the left have warned of an increase in authoritarianism.

Wednesday's police action involved 170 agents, who raided apartments and other buildings in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Hamburg and other localities. The actions were accompanied by the closure of the group's website and the freezing of two bank accounts.

Seven suspects are accused of organizing a campaign with the aim of collecting 1.4 million euros to finance "other criminal activities".

Two of the activists being investigated are suspected of having attempted to sabotage the infrastructure of an oil pipeline passing through the Alps from the Italian city of Trieste to Ingolstadt last year./ CNA.al
