Afghanistan: The Taliban close the doors of universities to women

A statement from the Afghan government instructed all private and public universities to implement the ban on female education until further notice.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Higher Education without any justification and the exclusion of women from university studies is expected to take effect immediately.

Dozens of women protested on Thursday (22.12.) in Kabul against the decision to exclude women and girls from university studies. The Taliban suppressed the demonstration.

Since taking power in August 2021, Islamists have massively restricted women's rights.

Girls and women are largely excluded from public life and are not even allowed to attend secondary schools from the seventh grade onwards. In Kabul, women have even been banned for several months from going to public parks and gyms./DW
