The EU fines Apple 1.8 billion euros

The EU Commission has imposed a fine of 1.8 billion euros on the technology giant Apple.

The US company abused its dominant market position by selling music streaming apps to iPhone and iPad users through its digital app store, the Brussels authority said.

According to the Commission, Apple prohibits other music streaming providers from selling iPhone and iPad subscriptions: thus they are not allowed to provide information about prices, or include links to websites through which a subscription can be obtained.

"This is illegal under EU rules," argued the Commission.

Shortly after the announcement, Apple announced that it would take legal action against the sentence. According to Apple's lawyers, the EU Commission has not presented any reliable evidence of harm to consumers./ DW
