Elon Musk has announced that he will step down as CEO of Twitter when he finds someone to replace him.

The billionaire earlier promised to stand by the result of a Twitter poll, where 57.5% of users voted "yes" to his removal from the role.

He says he will continue to lead the software and server teams once his replacement is found. Changes to the platform since Elon Musk took over Twitter have been heavily criticized.

Musk has fired about half of his staff and attempted to use Twitter's paid verification feature.

It has also been criticized for its approach to content moderation, accusing it of taking steps that will increase hate speech and misinformation.

On Friday, Musk was condemned by the United Nations and the European Union for Twitter's decision to suspend several journalists covering the social media firm.
