Rule approved, clubs forced to activate youth

The Executive Committee of the Albanian Football Federation has approved the rule for the mandatory activation of young players in national championships, which will come into force starting from the 2026–2027 sports season.

This decision is part of the AFF's strategy for the development of Albanian football, increasing opportunities for young footballers and creating a stronger base for national teams.

Also, this rule, in addition to aiming to increase the activation of young Albanian footballers in national championships, increase competition between local footballers, aims to create a sustainable development model for the next decade.

According to the approved regulation, in the Albanian Premier League and the Albanian Cup, each team will be obliged to activate from the first minute, for at least one part of the game, a footballer born in 2007 and later, with an Albanian passport.

Meanwhile, in the First Category, Second Category and Third Category, clubs will have to activate at least one player born in 2007 and later, with an Albanian passport, from the start of the match, who must play for the entire duration of the match, except in cases provided for by the regulations.

The regulation also stipulates that, in the event of a substitution of a player who meets the criteria, he must be replaced by another player who meets the same age and nationality criteria. If this is not possible, the team will continue the match with one less player for the period during which the obligation to activate the new player exists.

The rule will apply to all matches of the respective championships, as well as the Albanian Cup. Clubs are responsible for registering players and respecting the provisions of the regulation.
