Why we feel hungrier in winter

During the winter, many of us notice that our food cravings change and we often crave warm, filling foods like soups or hearty dishes.

Furthermore, this appetite is also influenced by social and emotional factors, such as holidays, family gatherings, and social dinners that revolve around food can lead to greater food consumption.

1. The body's natural reaction to cold

Winter can increase our metabolism as our bodies try to maintain a stable internal temperature. When temperatures drop, our bodies use a special type of fat to produce heat. This can increase our metabolic rate and cause our bodies to burn more calories to stay warm, which in turn increases our appetite for food to compensate for the calories we burn.

2. The digestion process

Not only does metabolism increase in the winter, but digesting food also requires extra work from the body, which also produces heat. This extra heat from digestion makes us feel like we are “warming up” from food, and this can motivate us to eat more carbohydrate- and protein-rich foods to keep our bodies warm and energized.

3. The effect of light and serotonin

Less light during the winter can affect the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps regulate mood.
