"Why do my feet hurt when it's cold?" – is one of the frequent questions we hear when the weather starts to cool down.
Joint pain can occur for a variety of reasons, but is often a symptom of an injury or disease.
AgroWeb.org invites you to take a brief look at these reasons and how you can deal with it.
You can experience pain in any part of your body, but discomfort from the change in weather occurs mainly in the hips, knees and ankles.
If you spend more time exercising in the cold, you'll put more pressure on your weight-bearing joints. The pain you feel may be caused by restricted blood flow to the joint or changes in pressure.
In some cases, the answer is obvious, as studies have shown that people with arthritis usually experience joint pain when the weather gets cold.
Some other theories suggest changes in atmospheric or barometric pressure, which refers to the weight of air that decreases in cold weather. This drop in barometric pressure can put pressure on your joints, causing nerves to transmit pain signals.
Another theory suggests that the synovial fluid inside your joints thickens in cold temperatures, causing joint stiffness and pain in cold weather.
It is also known that during the colder months the body tries to conserve more heat and sends more blood to the organs in the middle part of your body, such as the heart, lungs and digestive organs.
As a result, your body sends less blood to your legs, knees, arms, shoulders, and other joints.
This reduced blood flow causes the blood vessels in the joints to narrow, making the areas stiffer and colder, and causing pain and discomfort.
This explanation only applies to the pain you feel while out. Such pain increases significantly when you are active or when you put pressure on the joints of your feet, such as when running.
As you can see there are many theories that explain this phenomenon, but despite them, there is no definite theory that explains the root cause.
Staying warm can help reduce joint pain.
Some ways to stay warm and avoid sore feet in cold weather are:
Do exercises that warm you up
Perform exercises that stimulate your cardiovascular system by increasing blood flow to your muscles and raising your body temperature.
Dress thicker
Wear suitable clothes that protect you from the cold, especially when you exercise outside. As your body warms up, you can remove some clothes as needed.
Do not suddenly stop training
This will prevent tight muscles and stiff joints, maintain optimal blood flow, and maintain your pace and motivation to keep going.
Stretch the muscles
Immediately after exercise, do some muscle stretching to reduce the tightness that occurs immediately after prolonged exercise.
Stay inside on very cold days
If you must exercise every day, exercise indoors when the winter is harsh.
Additionally, you can manage symptoms through healthy habits, some of which include:
Maintaining a healthy weight.
Eat healthy.
Stay active.
Stay warm in winter by dressing appropriately.
