"Grey's Anatomy" star dies of rare muscle disease

Eric Dane, the actor best known for his roles in the series "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," has passed away at the age of 53. Less than a year ago, Dane had discovered that he was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane played the role of family patriarch Cal Jacobs on the hit HBO teen series “Euphoria.” Before that, he was perhaps best known as Dr. Mark Sloan on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

The news of his passing was announced by the 53-year-old's family. He was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he had two children.

"It is with a broken heart that we announce that Eric Dane passed away Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS. He will be greatly missed and will always be remembered with love. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the love and support he received ," his family said in a statement.

Dane also played the role of Jason Dean in the fantasy drama series “Charmed” and Captain Tom Chandler in the action drama series “The Last Ship,” while appearing in films such as “Marley & Me,” “Valentine's Day,” and “Burlesque.”

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare disease that causes progressive muscle paralysis. It affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement, causing patients to slowly lose their ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe independently. /CNA
