NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana visited Pristina on Thursday where he met with the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani and visited the KFOR peacekeeping mission.

Geoana denounced Russia's "illogical and brutal war" in Ukraine and its "aggressive and malicious influence on the Western Balkans".

“Ne kemi një interes strategjik... në Ballkanin Perëndimor. Dua të dërgoj një mesazh shprese për të gjithë njerëzit në Ballkanin Perëndimor se në fund të gjithë ne do ta gjejmë veten në familjen evropiane dhe euroatlantike”, tha ai për Associated Press.

Disa vende të Ballkanit Perëndimor janë anëtarë të NATO-s - Shqipëria, Kroacia, Mali i Zi dhe Maqedonia e Veriut - ndërsa Serbia dhe Bosnja Hercegovina janë partnerë.

Kosova ka konfirmuar se do të aplikojë për anëtarësim në Partneritetin për Paqe, që konsiderohet si hapi i parë në procesin e anëtarësimit në NATO.

Trupat e NATO-s kanë qenë të pranishme në Kosovë që nga viti 1999 pas luftës ndaj Serbisë, e cila përfundoi me një fushatë 78-ditore bombardimesh të NATO-s.

Geoana hailed NATO members in the region who have increased defense spending as "a natural reaction to Russian aggressiveness," adding that NATO "would defend all allies and every square inch of territory."

Geoana reaffirmed the alliance's commitment to "stand by Ukraine as long as it takes."

"They deserve our help. And that great nation deserves to be a free, independent, sovereign nation in Europe," he said.
