The tragedy in Italy deepens/ 58 people lose their lives from the flooding of the ship

The tragedy deepens in the south of Italy, where the ship with 180 immigrants sank.

The BBC reports that at least 58 migrants, including a baby, have lost their lives.

A coast guard said 80 people had been pulled out alive, including some who made it to shore on their own after the ship sank.

The immigrants were mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Iran. President Sergio Mattarella said many people were fleeing Africa to Italy because of "very difficult conditions".

The ship is reported to have sunk after hitting rocks in bad weather near the coastal town of Crotone, in the Calabria region.

Meanwhile, the customs police have declared that they have arrested a survivor on the charge of migrant trafficking./ CNA.al
