Meloni, message to Zelenskit/Ukraine can count on Italy

Ukraine can count on the support of the new Italian Government, said the leader of the extreme right, Giorgia Meloni, in the message sent to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenski.

"You know you can count on our loyal support in the cause of the freedom of the Ukrainian people. Stay strong and have faith," Meloni wrote in a post on Twitter.

She responded to a congratulatory message sent by Zelenski after Meloni's party, the Brothers of Italy, won Sunday's general election.

“Ne vlerësojmë mbështetjen e vazhdueshme të Italisë për Ukrainën në luftën kundër agresionit rus. Ne llogarisim në partneritetin produktiv me Qeverinë italiane”, shkroi Zelenski në "Twitter".

Kryeministri në largim i Italisë, Mario Draghi, ka qenë një prej mbështetësve më të fuqishëm të sanksioneve të Bashkimit Evropian kundër Rusisë, për shkak të luftës në Ukrainë, pavarësisht se Italia ka varësi të madhe ndaj gazit rus.

Roma po ashtu ka dërguar armë për t’i ndihmuar Kievit që të luftojë forcat e presidentit rus, Vladimir Putin.

Meloni është euroskeptike, por ka mbështetur qëndrimin e Draghit sa i përket Ukrainës – edhe pse aleatët e saj në koalicionin zgjedhor, lideri i partisë Liga, Matteo Salvini, dhe ish-kryeministri Silvio Berlusconi, kanë raporte të mira me Moskën.
