Germany refuses to send fighter jets to Ukraine

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius dismissed the possibility of sending German fighter jets to Ukraine.

He made the comments at a meeting with Western allies at the US air base, Ramstein, in Germany.

However, Pistorius said, Germany can provide Ukrainian pilots with planes they can operate immediately.

"It's not like going from one rental car to another," he said, referring to the differences between the two countries' fighter jets.

German Tornados and Eurofighters - two types of fighter jets - have different capabilities than what is needed in Ukraine, he said.

The West has been helping Ukraine with weapons since Russia launched its invasion in February last year.

Months ago, Germany sent its Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine.

These tanks are one of the best performing models in the world.

About 2,000 sosh are distributed among the allies in Europe, but all their export licenses are held by Germany.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has asked the West for fighter jets and long-range missiles to fight the Russian occupation forces.
