Erdogan: Turkey will ratify Finland's accession to NATO

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that Turkey will start the process of ratifying Finland's membership in NATO. Ratification must be formally approved by the Turkish Parliament, and Erdogan said he hopes this process will happen before Turkish parliamentary and presidential elections on May 14.

Gjatë një konference për media me homologun e tij finlandez, Erdogan tha se Turqia do të vazhdojë të diskutojë me Suedinë sa i përket çështjeve që lidhen me terrorizëm. Sipas tij, anëtarësimi i Stokholmit në aleancën ushtarake perëndimore do të varet drejtpërdrejt në masat që ndërmerr sa i përket kërkesave turke lidhur me terrorizmin. Presidenti i Turqisë tha se ka kërkuar që Suedia të ekstradojë 120 persona që Ankaraja i konsideron terroristë.

Në anën tjetër, presidenti i Finlandës, Sauli Niinisto, tha se vendimi i Ankarasë është shumë i rëndësishëm për shtetin e tij. Por, ai shtoi se anëtarësimi i Finlandës në NATO nuk është i plotë pa Suedinë. Finlanda dhe Suedia hoqën dorë nga politika e mosangazhimit ushtarak dhe majin e kaluar aplikuan për anëtarësim në NATO, pas nisjes së pushtimit rus të Ukrainës.

Finland, Sweden and Turkey in June last year reached a tripartite agreement. Turkey expressed its frustration at what it sees as Sweden's failure to live up to its commitments under the deal. Ankara suspended negotiations with Sweden after a protest held in January in Stockholm, where a Koran was burned in front of the Turkish Embassy building. But, on March 9, the two countries resumed talks in Brussels.

Turkey has accused Sweden of becoming a "haven" for members of organizations that Ankara considers terrorist. Currently, among the NATO member states, the accession of Finland and Sweden has not been ratified by the parliaments of Turkey and Hungary./ REL
