Finland: Turkey has made a decision regarding our membership in NATO

The President of Finland announced on Wednesday that Turkey has made a decision regarding the ratification of his country's application to NATO.

Sauli Niinisto said he will visit Istanbul this week to hear the decision from his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"The Turks have hoped that I will be there to receive the answer when they make the announcement. Of course, I have accepted and will go to accept their answer", said Niinisto.

Erdogan has signaled that he will give the green light to Finland. He said on Wednesday that "we will do our part, we will keep the promise we gave".

“Të premten, ne do të takohemi me presidentin [e Finlandës], ne do të bëjmë atë që thotë premtimi që kemi dhënë”, tha ai për gazetarët.

Ratifikimi zyrtarisht duhet të kalojnë përmes votimit në Parlamentin e Turqisë.

Finlanda, Suedia dhe Turqia në qershorin e vitit të kaluar arritën një marrëveshje trepalëshe. Turqia shprehu frustrimin e saj lidhur me atë që e sheh si dështim të Suedisë për t’iu përmbajtur zotimeve të marrëveshjes, ndërsa ka shprehur vullnet që Finlanda të ecë drejt anëtarësimit në aleancën perëndimore ushtarake.

Kryeministri i Suedisë, Ulf Kristersson, tha të martën se gjasat që Finlanda të anëtarësohet në NATO para shtetit të tij janë “rritur javëve të fundit”.

Finlanda dhe Suedia hoqën dorë nga politika e mosangazhimit ushtarak dhe majin e kaluar aplikuan për anëtarësim në NATO, pas nisjes së pushtimit rus të Ukrainës.

Ankara suspended negotiations with Sweden after a protest held in January in Stockholm, where a Koran was burned in front of the Turkish Embassy building. But, on March 9, the two countries resumed talks in Brussels.
