The Bundestag supports North Macedonia

On the eve of the change of the constitution in North Macedonia, the German Parliament adopted a special resolution on the European perspective of North Macedonia in the EU.

The parliamentary groups of the center-left coalition, SPD, Alliance 90/Greens and FDP, submitted a motion entitled "Actively supporting North Macedonia on its way to the European Union, which was voted by majority votes after a half-hour debate.

The Minister of State for Europe, Anna Lührmann, in the introduction of her speech, emphasized the importance of the stability of the Western Balkans, and with a call to the parties involved in Kosovo and Serbia: "Stability in the region remains fragile. This is currently reflected in the disturbing situation in the north of Kosovo. I appeal to the actors involved. Stop the escalating spiral!"

Lührmann: The amendment emphasizes the multi-ethnic character of North Macedonia

"The current constitutional amendment in North Macedonia, which includes new minorities, is important and needs support, but it is not without controversy," she said. "This is also due to the fact that the population there is slowly losing faith in the perspective of the EU. We must work together to restore the EU's credibility. We must use all our opportunities to encourage our partners in North Macedonia to take this important step," said the German minister, who is ahead of a trip to Skopje with her French counterparts. and Poland.

According to a compromise reached by the Council with North Macedonia in the summer of 2022, a prerequisite for the start of the first round of integration negotiations is a constitutional amendment that provides for the inclusion of the Bulgarian population group in the constitution of North Macedonia alongside the groups of others already mentioned. The amendment requires a two-thirds majority in the North Macedonian parliament. "The naming of different minorities in the constitution not only strengthens the protection of minorities, but also the multi-ethnic character of North Macedonia, which is a model for the entire region", said the Minister of State.

Në votë u hodh edhe mocioni i grupit parlamentar më të madh opozitar të qendrës së djathtë CDU/CSU për "Ripërtëritjen e perspektivës së BE-së për shtetet e Ballkanit Perëndimor me politikë të përkushtuar” (20/2339), por ai u refuzua me propozim të Komisionit të Punëve të Jashtme. Ne mocionin e CDU/CSU kërkohej një angazhim për integrim në BE, por edhe në NATO të gjashtë vendeve të Ballkanit Perëndimor, dhe ndër të tjera edhe që Shqipëria dhe Maqedonia e Veriut të mos ndaheshin nga njëra-tjetra. Ndër të tjera aty kërkohej edhe që të punohej në kuadër të grupit të shteteve anëtare të BE-së për zbatimin e menjëhershëm të liberalizimit të vizave për qytetarët e Republikës së Kosovës sa më shpejt që të jetë e mundur.
