The arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who is facing 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, did not appear in the court session at the GJKKO today, continuing his scheme of delaying trials.

This time, the justification for postponing the hearing was the absence of Veliaj's defendant lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, who did not attend the hearing, using the excuse that he was in another trial.

As a result of the continuous delays in court proceedings, the GJKKO has decided to accept the prosecutor's request to assign a lawyer primarily to the mayor, Valentina Teodorescu, while a fine of 50 thousand lek was imposed on the defendant lawyer Plarent Ndreca, as it was assessed that his absence is an excuse for postponing the session.

The GJKKO has also suspended the detention terms for Veliaj.

As CNA had warned, Veliaj has decided not to stand trial, so today's trial date was formal, as will be the date of the next trial, which is expected to be held on September 15th.

Veliaj is using every scheme and strategy, starting from illnesses, accidents, files, the glass cage, etc., to postpone the hearings because he is afraid to face the facts and evidence, and therefore avoids justice and delays the process.

9 charges of corruption, abuse of office, laundering the proceeds of crime, concealing assets, and bringing prohibited items into the cell are the charges against Veliaj.

Over 60,000 pages of facts and evidence have been sent to court, which Erion Veliaj is clearly afraid to face, given the schemes and scenarios he uses. / CNA
