Social media influencers and hashtags have changed vacation destinations, and not always for the better.

As the weather warms up on the Spanish island of Majorca, hundreds of tourists start flocking to Calo des Moro beach every day. A search of the social media platform reveals tens of thousands of photos of the beach looking deserted, its blue waters glistening in the sun. An Instagram influencer would have no idea that reality is actually far from this peaceful scene.

In search of the perfect vacation photo

Since the launch of Instagram in 2010, the same phenomenon has appeared time and time again: following in the footsteps of influencers, tourists search for the perfect vacation photo, flocking to places that were much less popular than they are now.

Sometimes, the consequences are drastic. For example, the Koenigbach waterfall in the Berchtesgadener Land region of Bavaria was forced to close to visitors after the growing number of day-trippers entering the area's natural pools endangered the ecosystem's balance.

Tourists have said in surveys that they are often encouraged to imitate photos on Instagram, and indeed the platform plays an important role in their decision for or against a particular destination.
