The constant use of smartphones and other digital devices is causing physical changes in people that often go unnoticed, but can have long-term health consequences. Experts warn that spending hours in front of screens is affecting the shape of the spine, vision, motor skills and muscle strength.

One of the main risks is known as "tech neck," where hunching your head to look at your phone puts up to 27 kilograms of pressure on your neck, causing disc and muscle damage, and even permanent changes in posture. Also, constantly wearing smartwatches can create a favorable environment for skin irritation, eczema, or sensitivity to materials like rubber or nickel.

In terms of vision, although close work is not directly blamed for myopia, excessive time spent indoors, away from natural light that stimulates dopamine in the eyes, is negatively affecting the development of vision in younger generations. Also, declining hand grip strength is emerging as a worrying indicator of overall health in young people, while excessive screen use is linked to a decrease in fine motor skills, which are essential for cognitive development.

To minimize these effects, it is advisable to hold the phone at eye level and at arm's length to avoid neck strain, as well as applying the pause rule, which recommends a 20-minute break from the screen every half hour. Spending time outdoors to take advantage of natural light is also essential for protecting your eyesight.

To strengthen physical fitness and coordination, experts suggest attending gyms or engaging in manual activities such as art, cooking, playing musical instruments, or handwriting. Finally, maintaining good device hygiene, such as periodically removing smartwatches, helps avoid skin problems.

Experts emphasize that there is no need to give up technology, but to become more aware of how we interact with it, introducing more physical and real activities into our daily routine. /CNA
