An earthquake with over two thousand victims has shaken Turkey today, as the number of lives lost continues to rise rapidly. According to what the BBC reports, citing the British seismologist, Stephen Hick, this could be the biggest earthquake that has hit Turkey, as he adds that the last biggest was in December 1939 with a magnitude of 7.8.
But why is Turkey hit so often by earthquakes?
Tuqia is one of the most active areas in the world, and this is because most of the country is located on the tectonic plate of Anatolia, where the latter is located between the two main plates, the Eurasian and African plates, and also next to another smaller one, the Arabic one.
Experts point out that as the two large plates move, Turkey is immediately affected between them, and according to the Emergency and Disaster Management Authority in Turkey, more than 22,000 earthquakes have been recorded in 2022 alone.
Many of the earthquakes caused by the movement of the plates have been deadly, where one of the most tragic was the one in 1999, which had a magnitude of 7.6 and claimed over 17,000 lives./ CNA.al
