France elects a woman speaker of parliament for the first time

MP Yael Braun-Pivet became the first woman to be elected to the post of Speaker of the French Parliament.

Brown-Pive, a member of the ruling Republican Party, won the confidence of 242 deputies, an absolute majority during the second round of voting in parliament.

Her election comes as part of the recent parliamentary elections in France, where the centrist coalition "Together" led by French President Emmanuel Macron won the majority of votes, but not the absolute majority, reports france24.
