Bucharest: Hezbollah's key financier is arrested

Mohammad Ibrahim Bazzi, a Lebanese-Belgian national who is considered a key financier of the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah, was arrested on Friday in Bucharest, Romanian federal authorities said.

Bazzi, 58, was designated a "global terrorist" by the United States in 2018, when a $10 million reward was offered for information on his whereabouts.

According to authorities, he has provided Hezbollah with millions of dollars over the years.

US Attorney Breon Peace in Brooklyn said the extradition of Bazz and 78-year-old Lebanese national Talal Chahine has been sought on the charges against him.

"Mohammad Bazzi thought he could transport hundreds of thousands of dollars from the United States to Lebanon without being noticed by law enforcement authorities," Peace said in the statement.

"Bazz's arrest proves he was wrong."

The charges against Bazzi and Chahine include conspiracy to induce US individuals to conduct illegal transactions with a global terrorist and conspiracy to launder money.

It is still unclear who will represent the two men when they arrive in the United States./REL
