The cultural tourism segment has recorded stronger growth than the tourism sector as a whole in the country.

Official figures show that the number of visitors to cultural institutions increased by 69 percent in January-May 2024 compared to the same period a year ago. It is about visiting museums, castles and other monuments as well as archaeological parks.

Specifically, until the end of May, there were over 350 thousand visitors, while a year ago this number was 216 thousand. Only in May 2024 there were 165 thousand visitors with a 46 percent increase compared to May 2023.

"During the month of May 2024, our cultural institutions were visited by 165,813 visitors, this value increased by 46% compared to the month of May of the previous year.

In the first 5 months of the year, the number of visitors is 350,772. Gjirokastra Castle had the largest number of visitors this month, where the number of visitors to this castle accounted for 17.7% of the total, followed by the Shkodër Archaeological Park, which accounted for 15.4% of the total number of visitors for the month of May; followed by the Museum of our National Hero, Gjergj Kastrioti in Krujë" states the statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

Cultural institutions

There are 12 museums in the country in total and from January to May 2024 they were visited by 145 thousand visitors or with a 69 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. At the top is the Gjergj Kastrioti Museum with 55,000 visitors, or twice as many as a year ago.

After it comes the Historical Museum in Tirana, which in 5 months marked an increase of 34.8 percent, but in May 2024 marked a decrease of 80 percent compared to May 2023. The third is the "House of Leaves" eavesdropping museum with 24 thousand visitors or 69 percent more than January-May 2023.

As for the castles in total, there are eight ranked with a number of visitors of 66 thousand or an increase of 60 percent compared to January-May 2023. In first place in terms of the number of visitors is the Castle of Gjirokastra with 50.4 thousand visitors or a 52 percent increase compared to January-May 2023.

In second place is the Amphitheater in Durrës with 7,000 visitors or a 49 percent increase, followed by the Venetian Tower in Durrës with 4,673 visitors.

In the list of Archaeological Parks there are 9 in total with a number of over 136 thousand visitors in January-May 2024 or a 53 percent increase compared to January-May 2023. In first place in terms of visitor numbers is the Shkodër Archaeological Park with 51.7 thousand visitors or 32 percent more than January-May 2023.

In second place is the Butrint National Park with over 38,000 visitors until the end of May or 79 percent more than in 2023, and the third is the Apolloni Archaeological Park with over 37,500 visitors./ Monitor Magazine
