EU reviews safety of ethanol in hand sanitizer used in hospitals

The European Union is considering whether to classify ethanol, a disinfectant widely used in hospitals, as a dangerous product.

The review comes at a time when this decision is currently on hold, due to a lack of consensus among scientific groups at the EU's chemical agency.

The decision was discussed today between European lawmakers and the European Commission, but the debate has been overshadowed by the decision's potential implications for healthcare institutions.

European lawmakers Christine Singer and Andreas Gluck have urged their colleagues in the European Parliament to ensure that the dossier is debated at the appropriate political level.

Ethanol is a clear liquid that can be burned as a fuel or used as a disinfectant. The EU is only considering its use as part of biocidal products, such as disinfectants and pest control products.

Under the EU Biocidal Products Act 27, all active substances used in such products must be approved before they can be authorised. /CNA
