Fire on Greek island/ 4 massive fires, 100 firefighters on the ground

A massive wildfire erupted on the Greek island of Chios in the early hours of Sunday afternoon and continues to burn out of control, with flames threatening residential areas and fire crews battling the flames on three active fronts.

The fire, which broke out beneath the Panagia Voitheia Monastery, has intensified due to strong winds, hampering firefighters' efforts and forcing the evacuation of many communities.

According to the Greek Fire Department, three separate fires were reported within an hour, in Kofinas, Agia Anna and Agios Makarios in Vrontados. A fourth front ignited just hours later, raising concerns of coordinated arson.

As reported by the Greek media outlet 'To Vima', more than 100 firefighters are currently deployed on the scene, supported by 23 fire engines. A group of 35 firefighters were also urgently transported by helicopter from Elefsina by a Hellenic Air Force aircraft.

Twenty firefighters with 10 vehicles are arriving by ferry from Piraeus, while another 35 are flying from Thessaloniki. Another 35 people and 5 vehicles, including the mobile command center "OLYMPOS", are also expected to arrive on the island from Piraeus./CNA
