Washington Post: Russia helps Iran with information on US positions

Russia is providing Iran with targeting information that is used for attacks against US military forces in the Middle East, according to a Washington Post report, according to three officials with knowledge of the data.

Sources say that since the start of the conflict last weekend, Moscow has been sending Tehran data on the positions of US military assets, including US warships and aircraft.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. One of them said there appears to be a fairly broad effort to share this information.

It is not yet entirely clear how much assistance Russia is providing to Iran. However, according to sources, the ability of Iranian forces to identify American targets was impaired within days of the start of the war, which makes this information particularly important.

 Since the beginning of the conflict, Iran has launched thousands of attack drones and hundreds of missiles against US military bases, embassies and civilian targets.

Meanwhile, the joint US-Israeli military campaign has struck more than 2,000 targets in Iran, including ballistic missile bases, naval installations, and political and military leadership structures.

Some analysts estimate that a prolonged conflict between the US and Iran could bring geopolitical benefits to Russia, such as increased oil revenues and shifting the West's attention away from the war in Ukraine.
