US President Donald Trump has declared that Iran's next supreme leader will not be able to remain in power without US approval.
In an interview with American media outlet ABC, Trump stressed that Washington should have a role in choosing the new leader after the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
"The US should be involved in choosing the new leader of Iran. If a candidate unacceptable to the US is chosen, he will not last long in power," Trump said.
The US president criticized the possibility of Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, becoming leader, calling it "unacceptable."
Until a new leader is elected, the country is being temporarily ruled by an interim governing council./CNA
