Rubio: Closing the Strait of Hormuz is a 'suicidal' act for Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that closing the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial, would be a "suicidal" action for the regime.

Rubio declined to say whether the US would take military action if Iran closed the strait, or whether the US would consider attacks on oil facilities by militias represented by Iran as direct actions by the regime.

"I'm not going to take away the president's options, this is not something we're talking about right now in the sense of being immediate," Rubio said.

Rubio said closing the strait would affect the US, but would have a much greater impact on the rest of the world, especially China.

"This would be a suicidal act on the part of Iran, because I think the whole world would come against them if they did this," Rubio said.

The US operation on Saturday, which the Trump administration dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, causing what the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said was “extremely severe damage and destruction.” The Pentagon acknowledged that obtaining a full assessment of the operation’s effectiveness will take time./CNA
