"For a life with dignity"/ Equality and justice for women demanded in

With the slogan "We march, we don't celebrate. We protect each other," a group of people protested in Pristina on Sunday, on International Women's Day, demanding more rights, equality and justice for women.

Protesters marched at noon from "Zahir Pajaziti" Square, towards the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, the Kosovo Police and the Judicial Council, to end at the Kosovo Government building, in "Skënderbeu" Square.

The march was organized with the motto "We revolt for a life with dignity."

During the protest, chants were heard, such as: "My body, my right", "Rapist, don't hide, prison awaits you", "Today we march, every day we fight" and "Who protects us from rapists? Our friends".

The organization "We March, We Don't Celebrate", which organized the protest, said that March 8 is a day that recalls the revolutionary origins of the women's movement and the need to continue efforts against inequality and violence.

They said that much work still remains to combat femicide and the various forms of violence against women: physical, emotional, economic and sexual.

In their announcement, the organizers also mentioned domestic violence, sexual harassment in public spaces, and the distribution of intimate photos without consent on the internet as some of the problems facing women in Kosovo.

They also criticized institutional decisions that, according to them, limit the rights of women and girls.

The protest took place at a time when women in Kosovo continue to face challenges in the labor market, in property inheritance, and in protection from violence.

According to data from the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS), around 80 percent of women in Kosovo are not part of the labor market. According to this data, men are employed at a significantly higher percentage than women.

Similar inequalities are also observed in ownership. According to statistics from the Kosovo Cadastral Agency, less than a fifth of properties in the country are registered in the names of women.

Meanwhile, according to United Nations estimates, one in three women in the world experiences violence during her lifetime, while every 10 minutes a woman is murdered.

In Kosovo, around 60 women have been murdered since 2010, and in most cases the perpetrators were their husbands or ex-husbands.

According to women's rights organizations, light sentences for rapists often send "empowering" messages to perpetrators of violence.

On International Women's Day, commemorative activities were also held in Pristina.

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, together with deputies from the Vetëvendosje Movement, paid homage at the "Heroes" memorial.

Haxhiu tha se në këtë ditë kujtimi për të mbijetuarat e dhunës seksuale gjatë luftës në Kosovë është edhe më i thellë.

“Le të kujtojmë edhe sakrificën e të mbijetuarave të dhunës seksuale gjatë luftës së fundit në Kosovë, por edhe të gjitha grave që kanë kontribuar për Republikën e Kosovës para, gjatë dhe pas luftës”, tha Haxhiu.

Ngjashëm me Prishtinën, protesta dhe marshime për të drejta të barabarta u mbajtën edhe në shumë vende të botës për të shënuar Ditën Ndërkombëtare të Gruas, më 8 mars.

Kjo ditë shënohet me protesta dhe aktivitete që fokusohen në barazinë gjinore, të drejtat riprodhuese dhe ndalimin e dhunës ndaj grave.

Protestuesit kërkojnë, ndër të tjera, luftimin e femicidit, mbrojtjen e të drejtave riprodhuese, pagë të barabartë dhe përfaqësim më të madh të grave në politikë.

Dita Ndërkombëtare e Gruas i ka rrënjët në lëvizjet punëtore të fillimit të shekullit të 20-të, përfshirë protestat e punëtoreve të industrisë së tekstilit në vitin 1908 dhe marshin “Bukë dhe Paqe” në Petrograd në vitin 1917.

Në shumë vende, protesta shoqërohen edhe me simbole të lëvizjes feministe. Në disa shtete të Amerikës Latine, për shembull, protestuesit mbajnë shami të gjelbra për të simbolizuar mbështetjen për të drejtat riprodhuese të grave. /REL
