The number of conflicts in the world reached the highest level since 1946

In 2025, 65 conflicts involving at least one state were recorded worldwide, the highest level recorded since 1946.

This is according to the annual "Conflict Trends" report published on Tuesday by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

The report also reveals that 2025 was the third deadliest year for conflicts since the end of the Cold War. 1994 and 2021 had the highest death tolls. Researcher Siri Aas Rustad said this year's figures are shocking:

"Usually I can find something positive in the report, but this year the numbers are truly shocking ," she said.

The number of direct conflicts between the two states doubled compared to 2024, reaching eight – the highest figure in the last 80 years.

These include clashes between: India and Pakistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand, as well as Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

In total, 35 countries were involved in the fighting. Some states, such as Israel, participated in several conflicts simultaneously, including in the Gaza Strip, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

According to the report, Africa was the continent most affected by state conflicts, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe.

The study is based on data collected by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), affiliated with Uppsala University in Norway.

The report also shows that around 245,000 people lost their lives in conflicts during 2025, making it the third deadliest year of the post-Cold War period.

The main causes of the high number of casualties were: Russia's war in Ukraine, violence in Sudan, and Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip.

Of these casualties, around 76,500 were civilians killed in direct attacks, a dramatic increase compared to 14,200 in 2024.

Only the years 1994 and 2021 were deadlier. This was due to the genocide in Rwanda, in which an estimated 800,000 people were massacred, and the civil war in Ethiopia's Tigray region, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed between 2020 and 2022.

The PRIO report said there were more deaths due to fighting in the past five years than in the entire two decades before 2021.

"What's happened in the last five or six years is that we have several major conflicts happening at the same time. The world is not resting at all," Rustad said. /CNA
