Iranian state media: New supreme leader elected

Iran's new supreme leader has been chosen and his name is expected to be announced soon. The supreme leader is chosen by the "Assembly of Experts," a body of 88 Islamic scholars all chosen for their loyalty to the regime.

Sayyid Ahmad Alam Alhoda told Iranian state media that the supreme leader has been chosen and the assembly of experts will make an announcement about his name.

According to international media, Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir previously said that the candidate was chosen based on the advice of the late supreme leader that his successor should be "hated by the enemy" rather than praised by him.

"Even the Great Satan (the US) has mentioned his name ," the senior cleric said of the chosen successor, days after Donald Trump said Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was an "unacceptable" choice for him.

Mojtaba has close ties to Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard and has long been seen as one of the leading candidates to succeed his father.

Recall that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in US-Israeli strikes on the first day of the war. A three-person leadership council was formed to govern the country on an interim basis immediately after the supreme leader's death.

It included:

Masoud Pezeshkian, the reformist president of Iran

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the hardline head of the judiciary.

Alireza Arafi, a lawyer and head of the Basij, a volunteer paramilitary force. /CNA
