Krasniqi re-elected as PDK leader

Memli Krasniqi has been re-elected as the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo – the party that came second in the February parliamentary elections.

After the election, he thanked the delegates who voted for him during the 11th PDK Convention, while vowing to work to ensure that his party comes out on top in Kosovo.

"I will do everything I know and everything I can to return the Democratic Party of Kosovo to where it belongs, as the largest and leading party of the Republic of Kosovo," said Krasniqi.

Afterwards, in a press conference, Krasniqi said that he was voted in unanimously and had no opposing candidate.

"I humbly take the fact that I was the only candidate as a testament to my leadership over the past four years. The race was open, but there was no opposing candidate," said Krasniqi.

Meanwhile, during his opening speech at the PDK Convention, Krasniqi said that his party must lead the country, adding that Kosovo needs to focus on development, security, justice, welfare and Euro-Atlantic integration, namely membership in NATO and the European Union.

"This is our goal, this is our direction," he said.

Krasniqi also spoke about the political situation following the February elections. He blamed the election winner, the Vetevendosje Movement, for holding hostage the formation of new institutions.

According to him, although LVV came first in the elections, it "has lost its legitimacy to govern," as he reiterated his position that he wants the formation of a new executive, with the parties that were in opposition last term, with Bedri Hamza in the position of prime minister.

In the February elections, Bedri Hamza, the mayor of South Mitrovica, was the PDK candidate for prime minister.

Krasniqi said that his party refuses to co-govern with the LVV, after blaming the party led by Albin Kurti for misgovernance.

"PDK continues to say 'no' to every idea for co-government that has brought Kosovo to this state because whoever brought Kosovo to the most difficult situation since the war must go into opposition," said Memli Krasniqi.

Four months after the elections, Kosovo has still not established its new institutions. For the 35th time in a row, MPs today failed to constitute the Kosovo Assembly, which would pave the way for the formation of the new executive.

The LVV, which has the exclusive right to nominate the speaker of parliament, has proposed Albulena Haxhiu to lead the legislative body. However, Haxhiu has so far failed to receive the necessary votes to be elected to the post.

Otherwise, Krasniqi was elected to the position of PDK chairman in July 2021, after Enver Hoxhaj had previously been acting chairman of PDK for eight months.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo was left without a leader on November 5, 2020, when Kadri Veseli resigned from the party leadership after the Kosovo Specialist Chambers confirmed his indictment for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Since then, Veseli has been in custody in The Hague. Also in The Hague is one of the founders of this party, the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, who is part of the joint indictment with Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, who are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. All former KLA leaders have pleaded not guilty./ REL
