Kallas: EU increased defense spending after Trump's phone call

The EU has listened to President Trump and is doing more to increase European defense spending. The statement was made by High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas to European media as NATO leaders gathered in The Hague for a historic summit.

Kallas commented on NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's message before the summit to the US president, expressing enthusiasm for the way he handled the Western alliance and the conflict in Iran.

"Mark Rutte is talking to Trump, I think he is speaking a language that President Trump definitely understands and should convey that. I think it is very important that everyone is doing this 5% and agreeing on this," Kallas said.

The Hague Summit is a meeting of the heads of state and heads of government of the thirty-two members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, their partner countries, and the European Union, which was held in The Hague, Netherlands, on 24–25 June 2025. /CNA
