Germany and France abandon future fighter jet project

Germany and France finally ended the joint project to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft, known as FCAS (Future Combat Air System), in which Spain was also involved.

The decision comes after months of disagreements between the project's main companies, Airbus and Dassault Aviation.

According to the German government, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron concluded that the two companies could not find an agreement to move forward with the project, whose value was estimated at around 100 billion euros.

The Elysee Palace also confirmed the failure of the initiative, emphasizing that it had become impossible to create a shared vision among the industries involved.

The project, initially announced by Macron and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, aimed to build not only a modern fighter jet but also accompanying drones, advanced communication systems and other integrated combat platforms. It was envisioned to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale aircraft after 2040.

The main disagreements concern the leadership role in the project. Dassault sought primary control of the aircraft's development, while the initial agreement provided for equal participation among France, Germany, and Spain.

The failure of the FCAS is considered a serious blow to European efforts to strengthen defense cooperation and create a common front in the face of security challenges in Europe.

However, Berlin announced that other parts of the project, such as communication systems, drone integration and advanced military networks, will continue to be developed within the framework of Franco-German cooperation.

One of the main points of conflict was France's demand that the new plane have the ability to carry nuclear weapons and operate from aircraft carriers, needs that Germany did not consider a priority. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether Airbus will seek new partners for similar projects in the future. /CNA
