Elections in Tirana/ Ilir Alimehmeti breaks silence, reacts to CNA

The name of doctor Ilir Alimehmeti remains one of the most controversial in the opposition for the Tirana Mayoral race in 2027, especially after his exclusion from parliament in the May 11, 2025 elections, which has given him "free rein" to focus on the capital.

In a reaction to CNA, Alimehmeti clarified his position following the repositioning of political forces. He made it clear that nothing will be one-sided, initially seeking an official line from the leadership of the Democratic Party.

Alimehmeti emphasized that before talking about specific names, the DP must determine the path it will follow on a national scale for the local elections.

"Initially, we will have to wait for a decision in the senior leadership forums of the DP on the approach and political strategy towards next year's local elections on a national scale, including the method of selecting candidates," he told CNA.

Although he did not directly confirm the candidacy, the member of the National Council of the Democratic Party expressed his willingness to make his contribution in accordance with the party's decisions.

"Then, within the decisions taken by the leadership forums, I will personally do the maximum possible for our strength ," Alimehmeti told CNA.

This reaction comes at a key moment, when the opposition is analyzing whether to move towards a new primaries process or seek a consensual figure to challenge the majority candidates in the "battle" for Tirana. /CNA
