This Thursday, former Prime Minister and former Socialist leader Fatos Nano passed away at the age of 73.

Life and family

Fatos Nano was born in Tirana on September 16, 1952. The son of Thanas Nano, a former director of Albanian Radio Television, and Maria Nano (Shuteriqi), a civil servant. Nano grew up in the neighborhood near “Hoxha Tahsim” Street in Tirana.

SCHOOLING

Nano graduated from the “Sami Frashëri” high school in Tirana. He continued his higher studies at the University of Tirana, Faculty of Economics. In 1975, he specialized in Political Economy.

In 1983, he received the title "Doctor of Science" in the field of economics, and in 2000, the title "Professor Doctor" in the field of economics.

The first years in the profession 

After graduating in 1978, Nano worked in the management of the Elbasan metallurgical factories until 1981. From 1981 to 1984, Nano served as an economist at the Priska Agricultural Farm in Tirana. In 1984, he was appointed as a researcher of socio-economic problems and market economy reforms of Eastern Bloc countries at the Institute of Marxist-Leninist Studies in Tirana, where he worked until 1990.

Engagement in politics

Nano began his political career in December 1990, when he was first appointed as Secretary General of the Council of Ministers. In January 1991, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Prime Minister, in the government of Adil Çarçan. The 10th Congress of the Party of Labor was held in June 1991 and subsequently elected Nano as the new leader of the Socialist Party on 13 June 1991. On 1 September 2005, Nano resigned as chairman of the Socialist Party.

Duties as Prime Minister

In late February 1991, Nano was appointed Prime Minister of a transitional government with the aim of organizing the country's first democratic post-communist elections. Nano served as Prime Minister of Albania in 1991, from 1997 to 1998, and from 2002 to 2005.

Sentencing

After the Democratic Party of Albania won the parliamentary elections of March 22, 1992, Parliament established a commission in early 1993 to investigate the activity of Fatos Nano for alleged corruption and abuse in the management of humanitarian aid provided by the Italian state during the economic crisis that lasted from 1990 to early 1992.

On April 3, 1994, Nano was sentenced to twelve years in prison. Nano was acquitted by a court in Tirana of alleged abuse of power and corruption in 1999.

Personal life

Nano had two children from his first marriage to Rexhina Nano, a son Sokol and a daughter Eda. On November 9, 2002, he married Xhoana Nano. /CNA
