Pope Francis honors the Albanian cardinal, Dom Ernest Simoni, who suffered imprisonment, persecution and death threats for about 28 years during the communist regime.

Dom Ernest Simoni was present at the general audience in Paul 6 Hall led by the Holy Father in the Vatican.

Pope Francis thanked him in a special way, considering him a "living martyr" who continues to testify and work for the Church.

"All of us have read the stories of the first martyrs of the Church. Today I dare to salute a living martyr in a special way, Cardinal Ernest Simoni. As an episcopal priest, he spent 28 years in prison. The communist prison of Albania, which was perhaps the most cruel persecution and he continues to testify. And many, many like him. He is now 95 years old and continues to work for the Church without being discouraged. Dear brother, I thank you very much for your testimony", said the Pope.
