Nonverbal communication in autism/ Speech therapist's advice: Be careful

Speech therapist Elis Musaraj shared some valuable tips related to the communication of children and young people on the autism spectrum.

Speaking on the podcast "Different, but together" on CNA TV, Musaraj said that nonverbal communication through gestures, gaze or facial expressions can

"The lack of nonverbal communication does not automatically mean that an individual with autism does not understand, that he cannot express emotions or that he has no feelings. This is the biggest mistake that can be made. It means that he uses gestures, looks, mimicry, then it is the ability of parents, social group and therapists to understand him. Consultation with a specialist is the best thing that a parent can do. To share whether it passes on its own or needs to be followed up," said the speech therapist.

Musaraj further explained that children should be allowed to communicate freely, without parental interference or assistance.

"The first mistake is that we should not overwhelm children. When they want to express something, we should not complete it. It is a typical mistake. We should not speak in the presence of children as if they could not. We should not say 'will you ever speak!'", he said.

Among other things, the speech therapist also focused on an important element in today's world, technology, as he suggested that devices be used with care and that exposure to them not occur before the age of 5.

"Technology, if used responsibly, helps because it creates alternative communication. It facilitates therapy, while exposure at early ages is not necessary, up to the age of 5. We need things in Albanian that speak, not voiceless dolls," the speech therapist added./ CNA
