The Constitutional Court examines Erion Veliaj's appeal today

Today, the Constitutional Court will review the appeal of the former mayor arrested on 13 charges and 5 serious criminal offenses, Erion Veliaj, who has requested the suspension of President Bajram Begaj's decree on the date of the elections in Tirana. The hearing at the Constitutional Court will start at 10:00 and will be public. 

We recall that the Constitutional Court has not overturned any of the acts dismissing Erion Veliaj, it has simply temporarily suspended the president's decree on the election date until it makes a decision.

The Constitutional Court has suspended the election date and the decision of the President's decree until it rules on Erion's appeal.

Former Mayor Veliaj himself has requested to be present at the hearing, while the Constitutional Court has notified the Directorate of Prisons and SPAK to take measures to accompany him.

We recall that Erion Veliaj was arrested on February 10 and faces 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, 9 counts of corruption, abuse of office, bringing illegal items into the cell, laundering the proceeds of a criminal offense, and concealing assets.

Veliaj was dismissed upon proposal by the Municipal Council and then by decision of the Council of Ministers on September 25, 2025.

After his dismissal, Rama sent the vacancies for 6 municipalities to the Presidency and after 48 hours, President Bajram Begaj decreed the election date of November 9.

This presidential decree was appealed by Veliaj to the Constitutional Court, which will review it today at 10:00./ CNA
