Azerbaijan starts supplying gas to Slovakia

On December 1, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) started supplying gas to the largest state energy operator in Slovakia - SPP.

Gas supply is carried out on the basis of a short-term pilot contract between SOCAR and SPP. The companies intend to develop a long-term energy partnership, SOCAR told "Caliber.Az".

Slovakia has become the twelfth country to receive gas from Azerbaijan, along with Turkey, Georgia, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and North Macedonia.

In particular, Slovakia has recently taken steps to diversify its sources of gas supply due to uncertainties surrounding its dependence on Russian gas. Slovenský Plynárenský Priemysel (SPP), the state gas supplier, signed a short-term pilot contract with Azerbaijan's SOCAR to import natural gas. This initiative is part of a wider strategy to ensure reliable energy supplies, as the agreement to transit Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of 2024.

Azerbaijan supplies natural gas to many countries, especially in Europe, through the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), which is an important infrastructure project for the diversification of energy sources in Europe. In 2023, Azerbaijan exported approximately 23.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas to markets in the EU, Turkey, Georgia and Serbia. Top European destinations include Italy, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), part of the SGC, is a vital route connecting Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas fields with European consumers.
